The English are often credited for their way with words. It was claimed that an Englishman could tell you to go to hell, and because of the way in which he said it, you would look forward to the trip.
I freely admit that when reading Glen’s posts, I am made aware of my ineptitude on many things concerning our governance. Glen is clearly a learned man with a gift for expression and logic. However in many instances, even after reading and understanding his posts, I am left with unsettled feelings.
Taoism teaches that the truth is as light as a feather and at the same time, as heavy as lead. This is to say that, the truth can be understood on many levels regardless of the short commings of one’s intellect.
My unsettled feelings are based on the fact that even though his expression, logic, facts and figures are impeccable and his intellect dizzying, it does not change the core wrongness which he defends.

The GOB :
Knew that the Registry had been privatized.
Knew the contractual revenue split formula.
Knew that the country is in a financial crisis.
Paid the tax on behalf of Ashcroft.
Even the Belize Times described the registry deal as “creaming off taxpayers’ money."
You can put a monkey in a dress, call it a woman, and have sex with it. You can proceed to argue that that monkey is in fact a woman by employing logic, facts and figures. If you are talented, your audience may be convinced that the ‘being’ in the dress IS in fact a woman.
But does it really change the fact that you just fucked a monkey?

I think we have a problem with the specifics of the contract and just the blatant disregard for the public's interest. No consequences for these guys, and that's from the top down, Look at their attitudes, didn't the prime minister say "this will blow over like a breeze", or something to that effect.

So sorry dude, I can't argue emotion.
If you disagree with the transaction, that's fine. I happen to agree with the privatization of the Registry.
I disagree with the sale and re-sale of BTL, for example, simply because in my opinion it doesn't and won't benefit Belize and Belizeans.
It won't mean lower rates, better service or improved managment of the company. But I won't argue against it because I may not like Said or Ralph or Dean Barrow or Paul or Christine.

I can't agree with your basic premis that there was something sinisterly wrong with the privatization of the Companies Registry.
GOB agreed with the privatization primarily because of the recommendation from the World Intellectual Property Organization.
When the privatization occured no one questioned the split because few, if any, thought that the registry would be collecting the amount of revenue it ultimately generated. Almost the entire Belize Bar Association was silent on the matter with only Dean Barrow objecting in the House of Representatives. And then even his his objection was tepid at best, that is it was made on the singular basis that GOB should retain companies and patents registration because it was properly a government function.
So what we have now is everyone, including the Cabinet, with 20/20 hindsight.
GOB paid the stamp duty under the assumption that it was paying itself, so to speak. In trying to be accountable, it did not just do a "paper transaction". One of the laudable reforms that was passed by legislation just this year is that the Minister of Finance no longer has the power to waive stamp duty, even for itself. When the registry's privatization occured this was not a consideration.
GOB didn't pay stamp duty for Ashcroft, no stamp duty was paid or collected in any of these (BTL) transactions so this was not a special case or exemption.
The privatization deal is what it is - nothing more, nothing less. It is not something pretending to be something else. The fact is that it has been done other places, and will be done in other places in the future.
Why is it that a process that was accompanied by legislation, and therefore subject to discussion/debate at the highest level of our government, that is the House of Representatives, is now some "secret" deal, and it is a question of who knew?
Check what Taoism teaches about when we find the "truth" uncomfortable ... is it simply because the "facts" are inconvenient?
