one of those houses in fresh pond, I guess it was preconstruction at the time and the plans looked real promising. I swallowed the line, sinker, hook and bait; I believed in Belize!!! I was a sucker, typical PUP M.O. sell you a dream and deliver a nightmare. Years later I took a drive back there and I thought I was in a Hollywood zombie movie. None of the promises/plans materialized, the houses are abandoned the roads are in a horrible state and now I am finding out that the river can flood that entire area. A couple years later I was taken to another housing scheme in Cayo behind a mountain with little to no real roads and a whole lot of empty houses. It was eerie to pull up to a housing development larger than most villages in country but mainly empty.

PUPs will argue that one natural disaster along the coast will populate these empty developments.

But until then its just another scam with little to no return on our monies.

I am not sure that most of these houses built by di PUP will stand another five years. To make it worst you go to fresh pond and other housing developments you see the waste.

If the people couldn't pay as low as $150 in mahogany heights and 2 housing sites in cayo that dfc built....how can unemployed, NO COLLATERAL (most indiginous maya don't own land as it is prohibited by tradition)people afford these houses???? Musa must be on fucking crack...either crack cocaine or godfrey smith's ass crack.

on one note here shabba, novelos aint bankrupt. out of all the companies that they own, the government of belize inhereited all the debt of Novelo's smallest company - Novelo's Bus Company. The novelos are richer than they ever were and are trying to sue the government for the simplest technicality gone wrong between the contract signed so that they get more. I agree with most of skanless explanations and i agree that most of this government's projects, program are here to benefit a few. free textbook program, mahogany heights, btl vesting bill, belize cruise turism port, stakebank turism port, etc. all corrupt deals. BUT the thing is that the PUP are full of lawyers and good ones too. so they are getting somewhere here. IN the case of the UDP, DEAN Barrow is probably the only good lawyer and the rest are not really in their correct minds. The FACT is that too much lawyers are bad for politics. HOWEVER, these people LOVE BELIZE. They LOVE IT. AS MUCH as they are deteriorating the country at this point, they seem to be doing something to make things better. IT HAVE TO GIVE MY PROPS TO skanless in his believe that a government (ANY AND ALL GOVERNMENTS) should provide jobs first before giving away houses. ITS just not right how its being done.
MY FIRM OPINION is that both governments have the country's people at heart and both are corrupted and both have some good candidates. what concerns my most is the UDPs ability to govern us properly. i agree with u buddy. good luck on the college thang. education is a key issue down here. we can try to get out of poverty by investing so many millions in southside and toledo but one day we will realize that the only way is education. it makes a big difference just listen to the words u and roadfly and other have to say versus that of someone with no education like ras koncas.

No, I am not currently living in Belize. I am pursuing a graduate and eventually my post graduate Degree in the U.S.. Nonetheless, I try my best to keep abreast with whats happening in Belize through various sources including Belize Times, Amandala, Reporter and listen to Belize's news cast every evening without any compromise. Its not until after reading or hearing the stories from all medium, do I come to a conclusion by extracting the commonalities amongst the sources. I visit home regularly (at least every three to six months). My ambition is someday after ccompleting my post gradute degree to go back home and give back to a society that provided an opportuity for me. Note: I said a society not a governement. Having said that, I think I am in a situation to voice my concern as a true Belizean.

Dude, I agree wtih you. UDP did not make the best decision in buying those trailer houses. It was a waste of tax payer money. The issue here is not who provides the best or better houses. My argument here is that why put a bag over the peoples eyes by giving them a house and not jobs? Honestly, do you think that they will be able to pay for it? With cost of living so high due to GST, Fuel Tax, Butane Tax and expensive school fees for them pikni them. This is the reality. I will admit, nowhere in the this world will you have the perfect life. However, in some place the infrastructure exist for the citizenry to attain, this is not the case in Belize right now, the only who attain that the Government Ministers and their friends and family. I am surprise to hear people are still working for $100.00 a week. How do they survive on that....."Oh...*blink*....'Get a governement house'". I do not think any government should be giving out any house. Social assistance should be limted to health care. However, what a government should do is provide opportunities by stimulating the economy and actively seek new investors to invest in new industried in our country rather than lending out the already limited public purse to its cronies under the guise of building houses for the poor, which not provide nay returns.

Human resources is the best recources and country can have and in Economics 101 they teach u that no economy can survive without Capital and technology. This current administration invest in none of the above. If you think I am lying......try recalling the VOIP scenario in Belize. If that had gone through dude, I am personally telling there were many companies which would have move to Belize, where english is spoken, rather to in India to open their call centers.

skanless do u live in belize? its not good to go on hear say or what has been argued on this site.do u know that the monthly rate of some these house are as low as $150 ( i got one). the higher end ones ( not los lagos) i know for a fact are no more than $350. helping a belizeans getting a home is a big deal and a great investment. and like i said before these houses were not the "homes on wheels" a.k.a tin cans that the udp brought in. people are still paying for these "homes" and they have rotted away. i know where i live there are only 2 still standing of the 100 that applied. why dont u mention those.as to whether they are at a lost, its too early to say that. the land is there and the infrastructure is still there eventually people will need these lands so i dont think all is lost. as to the bus company i agree with u because we all know no one follows belizean law well its not enforced i should say. and also i think no pup minister is involved with novelo it has been proven that glenn godfrey was the one that benefitted from that loan, the novelos are 1.) too greedy to have any partners. 2.) if they was a minister involved they wouldnt have gone bankrupt.

I believe there might be some houses which were built by the government and are currently being utilized by some Belizeans. But in many instances these people who are living in these government house, can not afford their mortgage on it. Hence, yes, the government is successful to have someone move into the house, but to say it's a successful investment?...I am not sure. Personally, I would prefer to see the government create more employment opportunity by endorsing an investor friendly environment thus inviting more investor/entrepreneurs which will create more employment for the grass root people. This in turn will allow people to actually pay for their house, build their own and eventually improve our economy and by extension heal a lot of our societal ills. I am willing to assume that the government is still at a economic lost for the houses they have built, though it is far less than the five thousand they had promise in their manifesto.

There is one philosophy that I strongly believe in; It is always better to teach a man to fish rather than to give the man a fish.

What's the use you give someone, who is not working a house? When he can not pay his mortgage, nor light bill, nor water bill he will come right back to you and you will eventually have to take back the house. Capital investment would had been far more beneficial to this government, rather than building houses that people can not afford and which is structurally inadequate.

In terms of transportation, I will acknowledge there was a problem with safety on the roads as far these bus company racing each other. But the solution could had been stricter transport laws and stiffer fines for the transport laws. How come, the races and began and ended at the Border? These bus driver would not dear to race in Chetumal because they know the repercussion. Then should the believe that they have ther right to so within Belize? The short answer is "Belizeans laws are too lax".

Ultimately, I believe with the transportation, PUP was attemtping to create a monopoly for one of their supporters. This venture may had also been because some of the same PUP ministers may have had some interest in the company.

skanless on telecommunications u got it right. but housing u named a few and not have into account the many that were succesful. a lot of people benefitted from the pups housing scheme. and also if i am not mistaken most if not all houses in los lagos have been sold, i think u should have said bougainvillea area san ignacio, fresh pond burrel boom, and mahogany heights e.t.c. sure these ones were bad but at i personally support concrete houses rather than the udp's "TIN CANS" they brought in for houses ( talk about corrupt deals). bel, port, airport i have to agree again as to transportation i guess no one can solve it not even the udp, remember pup inherited the problem from them. i guess what they were trying to do was stop all the races from happening on the road. and also somebody wanted to make a cut from the sale ( glenn godfrey). if u think about it dfc i think is pups biggest mistake. glenn godfrey should be jailed along with fonseca and musa. and any other corrupt official that has been found guilty. regardless of party.

Bzean Knocas, I really like your and RoadFly's synopsis. I think we are going somewhere here with your articulate ventilation of, the issues. Though others may have their opinion about the situation we can not discourage dialogue and the outflow of ideas. There is not much more that I can add to what you guys have said but I will say this. I do see your logic. However, I believe that UDP government has a more national interest at heart, while the PUP cover our eyes with all the glitters and gold and false sense of accomplishment. As you noted there has been some great developments since PUP took over office but realistically if we could get the "Return on Investment" I am confident the we will see that such returns are far less than money' which have gone amiss and debt incurred. Not to say that the little progress we have achieved is not a welcome one. Here are some comparisons that I can come up with right now.

1. Telecommunication Issues in Belize: It's all started off when the government started pissing off Lord Ashcroft in the early part of their administration. He withdrew US 200+ million dollars from the Central Bank overnight severely crippling our economy for some time. Next, in an effort to rectify and stabilize our economy (if this is not greed then tell me what it is)the government and cronies (remember, Glenn Godfrey) quickly came up with a scheme, under the guise of providing free internet to schools, which saw the conception of Intelco. We all know where Intelco is and how it got to where it’s at, today. If you would be kind enough, I would appreciate if you opine on whether this investment was one of National Interest or on to satisfy party member and/or supporters. (Keep this specific situation in mind because we will reference it again through out this convo.) Not only did Intelco fail, but the communication system in Belize continued costing us Belizeans. Remember Mr.Prossor!!! Yes, the Gentleman who the government of Belize financed to buy out BTL then when he could not pay and Ashcroft came back into the picture; they took away BTL back for Ashcroft. Not only did the government lose on that investment. They later on had to spend more on money on legal fees for litigation against them in Miami. As you may have known, the result of the case in Florida was not a favorable one for Belize. The communication saga continues up to this day where Ashcroft is now suing the government of Belize in Britain over those special interest shares amongst other things.

2. Housing "for the poor" - Los Lagos, anyone?!?!?!? Mahogany Heights?!?!?!
need I go on? Let me know and I will.

3. BEL/Fortis/Mollejon - Why is it that this government chooses to invest in project which are bound to fail from the get go? The result of privatizing BEL are multiple folds (most are beneficial to us)- Higher Consumer rate, less Belizean control over a mere necessity as electricity, less Environment studies as it relates project which this entity may undertake. (I think when I was last in Belize; someone told me that the electrical cable running form Mollejon through several rural villages can be the cause of cancer. Not sure on this one but I believe there have been cases of cancer being caused by the radiation produced by the transfer of high voltage power)

4. Port Authority - Luke Espat!!!... Again fronted by the government only to turn around and now litigating against them for breach of contract. This is after the loss US $50 million dollar contract with the cruise ship Company. This agreement with the cruise ship company may have provided the much needed jobs for our fellow Belizeans.

5. Airport and Lufthansa - Again sweetheart deal which went disarray. GOB again may be hauled into court for this one.

6. Transportation- Remember the Novelo's brother? All I will say on this on is, whenever I traveled (from OW) I would prefer taking Escalante's because it was cheaper, quicker and more reliable. Between Belize City and Belmopan, definitely go with Batty bus. This was only my preference after I was involved in an accident in Novelo's bus and a couple of my friends died. I have yet to see or hear from the now defunct Novelo's.

Lastly, this is one I personally hold against them. Student loan from DFC or the lack thereof I am sure there were couple ambitious Belizeans student who really needed assistance to pursue a professional degree outside of Belize or Cuba but the PUP government chose to forward the funds to the Novelo's and Godfrey (remember my first point? Told you it would come back). Then there is Ralph taking out Belizean money and wagering (for the lack of a better word.) it on the Japanese Yen Market. We all know that was a failure and the Belizean people were never given an explanation as to who authorize him to take public funds for such reckless investments.

As I have said before and will continue to say, PUP is a government which provides a facade of development but in the real world they are swindling Belizean People left right and center. I am not sure that the UDP can do any better but I would definitely suggest we give them an opportunity for them to prove us wrong. I must say though lengthy this blog is not endorse any given political party but merely to highlight what the Belizeans are currently confronted with and since the PUP is in power it will be totally inline for you to assume that I am bashing them because I am a UDP. However, I can reassure that this is not the case. If the UDP was the government and replicating these same issues I would call them out on it too. It’s us, the younger generation of Belize need to educate ourselves and use that knowledge to better our country. We can and should not be political party fanatics because it provides for us to become myopic thus not see the real picture.

Roadfly's elaboration on the issue is good and i respect that and i accept that 100%. Im no fanatic when it comes to politics. I sit here admitting that no party is perfect and its been implied by all of us in here. When it comes to politricks, we got to analyze it from different angles. no one is wrong, no one is right. BUT THE FACT IS that we learn and educate ourselves by listening to other people's opinions. SO this blog is one of national importance for our young readers. one of my analysis is by looking at the party's ability and competent ablility to govern a country. are the leaders able to withstand pressure? are they able to deal with the public's harassment, which is a situation that all government officials will inevitably face (especially ministers and senior officers deal with everyday). If i recall correctly, Mr Manuel Esquivel only served 2 or 3 years as PM in his 1994/5 term in office. he gave in and called elections. NO one can deny that we are in a better position now than before. ITS true that this PUP government has indebted us for the next 50 years but atleast we are seeing development. all these corrupted contracts benefit a few of PUP cronies but in the meantime, it provides developement in the tourism industry, industrial sector and more jobs are created. If we only had one port in belize (TOURISM VILLAGE), few belizeans would have jobs. Now That this Greedy PUP government gave LUKE contract to build his port then violated the contract and went ahead and offered another, more jobs are or will be made available (regardless of the bloated contracts). IF the UDP comes into office i dont know how they will handle the situation. IM guessing that they will arrest the economy so that they can be able to finance these ill-fated loans the PUP has made. that means that there will be little money for development, salary. More retrenchment. DAMN!

Ras Koncas analysis of Belize's debt over 50 years if really irrelavant. Even the worlds richest country USA has a debt of 10 trillion US dollars and UK has a debt of almost 8.3 trillion US dollars. Its actually simple. IF ras koncas's parents wants a nice house and aint got the money, they go to the BANK and make a loan and pay it over a period of 20 years. after 20 years, they are proudly say that the nice house rightly belongs to them. Its fairly easy to understand. just some common sense.

Issues like corruption are the on the table to be debated here at koncas. lets do that. FACT IS, we need tighter laws. DO YOU THINK THAT the UDP will implement tighter measures as sson as they get into office? i dont know but i they have waited almost 10 years to get into power and they are hungry for it. I dont think they will get in to implement tighter measures without first helping themselves with a little corrupted deals. But I can tell you what I want for starters:
I'll list them so you can focus on all or one or the ones you disagree with:

1. I want to see value for our money.
2. I want to see reform that holds public officials accountable for their actions. I want to see politicians that unjustly enrich themselves during their time in power held accountable; no more going into politics bruk and come out rich, full disclosure of assets prior to being swearing in and after leaving.
3. I want to see some sort of a recall mechanism that allows the public to determine when an election is held.
4. I want to see more disclosure from our government as to the state, I want the good and bad. I know the private media plays a role in this, I want it to be a big deal if it comes out government was not honest with the people.
5. I want to see the Ombudsman appointed by the supreme court as oppose to the prime ministers office.
6. I want to see political parties stop using the government to further the party's agenda while they are in power.

I can tell you that many countries in caricom have adopted some of these measures. The PM of Trinidad, Basdeo Panday, is currently looking at jail time for not declaring 100K in a UK bank. The PM of Grenada is in hot water over 100k election donation by a foreign investor that was seeking political favors. I have friends in some of these countries that are looking at our models for implementation: The Freedom of Information act and The NHI scheme, but if the people are tolerant of the bending and perversion of these policies/laws etc... Then we are back to square one.

So it sounds like there is one variable missing from bzeankoncas's PUP & UDP equation and that’s the People and that’s were the reforms come in to play. Many of my wants depends on the citizenry not on UDP or PUP. There is no way I can support this PUP administration when I know they violated all my wants, when I know my wants are only their becauss of their conspiracy to defraud the belizean public with their many hustles. Shabba you know what is going! I am sure you followed the UHS, SSB, DFC, Oil etc... debacles. Shabba I do take exception with the word "faults", you are making it sound as if they just made flawed decisions, when the it looks more like it was a deliberate act to rob the country’s coffers. They conspired to defraud us, how do I know this? Well if you look at the SSB or DFC scandal you will see that guidelines were just not followed. The processes that were put in place where just disregarded when it came to certain loans. That’s deliberate buddy, so are these Guarantees that don’t have ceilings on them that is deliberate.

At the same time I know that politics is fluid and ever changing so the day might come when I can support a new PUP with new leaders. I can't attack them on their policies on paper it looks and sounds good but when it comes to execution their GREED get in the way. This greed spoils the implementation of policies, there is just not enough money around to fill their pockets and carry out the policy.

4. REMEMBER all the public cayes and land that once belonged to the people but are now owned by pup straw men or the minister's family.

5. REMEMBER the oil that is OURS but still we don't have a clue as to how much of the pie belongs to us.

6. REMEMBER UHS deal, how adamant Said is about having us pay for his buddies, while not a peep about the girl who died because the hospital didn't have a 150.00 shutter in stock to keep her alive.

7. REMEMBER we lost all credibility in the international financial market. Remember that they took us from B++ rating to SELECTIVE DEFAULT.

Greetings my fellow belizeans, I have been reading this blog and I felt like its my Duty to put in my two cents. I must say that I am appalled by the senseless, immature, biased and unsupported comments made by ras koncas on the political issues. From his comments, it seems that ras koncas is very much a fanatic employed by the UDP and is being paid for his silly comments (very much like yellowman). Furthermore, it seems he has a problem with his social life as it seems that he finds it entertaining in insulting others in this website (hiding behind his computer screen). Im not here to tell u how to vote and which party to support, but it is the most ridiculous thing to do so without analyzing the situations and issues. And its not that hard if u can read English and understand what what, how and why things happen in Belize. Both the PUP and UDP are corrupt. IN FACT, all governments around the world ARE corrupt. ALL! Where there is money, there is power and where there is power there will be corruption. The difference between the two parties is that the PUP is corrupt but smart WHEREBY the UDP are corrupt but just plain STUPID! (To say the least). Lets take this for example: The PUP wants to win the next general election so they implemented the free text book program to win the heart of Belizeans (Campaign strategy). The UDP wants to win the next general and they RETRENCHES over 800 teachers! Only the fanatic fools will oppose the free text book program and they are the same people talking about things haad out ya. When it comes to Ralphie’s Death, it was just plain stupid for ras koncas to mix it with politics, which shows that ras koncas is just in need of a argument – to win and not to educate and learn.

But it didn't matter he was a good guy who was always willing to help, he was passionate about what he believed in, sometimes a little too much with the "you are with us or against us" attitude. The last time I saw Ralphie he was helping out a lady with some land problems she was having with government. I ran into both Ralphs at that time, Fonseca and Balderamos around 12 p.m. (way past business hours) and he was listening to this lady's long list of needs. I remember laughing because his food was getting cold but he didn't touch it instead he was writing down her needs and that lady wouldn't let the man go.

I met the guy while he was studying up in Tampa way before the whole politics thing and we hit it off, he was a real person. I understood that politics was a conversation we didn't have to have because we were friends before politics came into the scene.

I agree with you Cass the road/traffic conditions in Belize needs to be improved drastically. I have been in three different automobile accident in Belize during two visits. I dread driving the western highway while in Belize especially around that Butcher Burns area, on the Western Highway. My last flip was in that area after a drizzling. The highway did not seem wet nor slippery but me and my passengers learnt the hard way that it was wet and slippery. Luckily we all survived. I have also had, though Ralphie's death was caused by different circumstances, several friends of mine who died in accidents caused by cane truck either parked without light/reflector or driving on the highway, without same. These accidents all happened between the Tower Hill and Libertad Junction. There is a curve by the Come N Go gas in OW, this is very dangerous curve, but that is not as dangerous as those cane truck recklessy parked on the highway. The curve is a "known constant" hence you can prepare for it. However when you are driving on the freeway and a cane truck appear in front of you from the dark there is little you can do to get away from it, that is an "unexpected/variable".

Though not endorsing your mentality Ras Koncas, neither am I saying that your opinion is wrong (since I am in no position to judge you), but there must be a part within each of us that feels a sense of "lost"(using the term "lost" loosely) when someone dies. Whether we know that or not, I believe it is only human.
