Ubuntu Server FTP
I will need more information on your configuration. Check your logs and see what it says as well. Also, for more help, you can go to the belize Linux form here. You will get more help there from the linux users here in Belize. You will need to register to be able to post comments and view previous posts.
Next weekened there is also a planned Linux Install Fest to be held in Benque (Nov 11). You are more than welcome to come. Bring your computer along if you want to test out different distros. This is still in the planning, for more information, go to the linux belize forum.

Patch Drupal
Need to patch drupal so that it won't allow users from sending empty Comments. If you just place a 'blankspace', it will accept it as valid. I am not sure if the latest version of drupal allows that, need to check.

Thanks for the tip FenP, loving screen. :D
For those that prefer gnome-terminal, you can use tilda, its not as fancy as yakuake tho. Will try to use screen over ssh now, will make my life easier when doing remote admin. :D

Yakuake QUestion
FenP, I installed yakuake. It is pretty nice but I have a few questions. When I am using gnome-terminal, I press ctl-alt-# and it will take me to that specific tab if i have multiple tabs in that terminal. I like that alot because I don't have to take my hands off the keyboard. I tried it with yakuake, but nada....you know how to do this on this specific terminal?

I have Xubuntu running on an
I have Xubuntu running on an old PIII with 256Mb RAM. In fact, this PC was kinda old, it was originially an old PII, and I upgraded mobo 7 years ago for a PIII. But I kept the same old hard-drives, and floopy and RAM, etc. I added a new HD about three years ago, and its still flying faster than most XPs out there. I can bet its start-up time is less and its much more stable. I have Win2000 running on one HD and Xubuntu 6.06 running on the other one. I plan on upgrading RAM to 2G and then be able to run Xen or VMware,so I can then run Windows inside Linux. That way my folks at home will just click on a lil windows icon on the screen, and run whatever win apps they need, without me having to worry about viruses and all that nonesense. I have the Ubuntu Alternative ISO and can allow you to download from my server, but you must tell me when you can do it, so I can allow you traffick through my firewall. I am also preparing some linux classes for some of my staff, which will start next week. Would be interesting if can have a live stream ....hhmmmm...something to think about --e-learning?
I have also ran Linux on old PII, but used blackbox or enlingthment for the window manager to make it more usable, and instead of OpenOffice I used tetex and w3m/lynx instead of Firefox, but that is kinda geeky...:) not everyone is used to the command line. What I do with those old box is convert to Servers. You can store your music in one old PII box, and stream from that box to anyother computer in your house. Or you can take one of them and convert to MythTV, I can also give you some guidance on how to do that. Or even better yet, what about having your own PBX? Installing an extension to each phone in your house, and printing out bills of phone calls made from each phone? You can even go as far as configuring a PBX using Linux, in each of your relative houses, and make calls by just dialing 3 number extensions and using the internet. You wouldn't have to pay any extra phone bill, just your normal DSL bill. Possibilities are endless, you can go as far as where your imagination lets you...

Alternate CD
When you go to Ubuntu to download: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download You click on the check box that says: Check here if you need the alternate desktop CD. This CD does not include the Live CD, instead it uses a text-based installer.
That is right below the 'Start Download' Symbol.
For a beginner, its best if you use a dedicated hard-drive for linux so you can test it out and not worry about deleting your existing system.
The installer will do all the partitioning for you, but it also gives you the option to do the partitioning yourself. You might need to do a little reading if you want to do it yourself. I prefer to do it myself, because it gives me more control. Also, you can separate your data nicely. I create a partition where I put all my back-up data, so that in the event that I want to do re-install I can still keep my data without worrying about it getting deleted

the hard drive!
its a separate HD (just in case i screwed up my windows and loose my data) so its doesn't matter what on it.
i figured the installation would format, i don;t know, and if i format it prior to install, what file system should it be formatted to? fat32 16, NTFS? ahaha, i don;t know.
which is better entire disk or partitions? it completely for kubuntu/ubuntu.
i'm installing off the live CD. its too slow, i keep wondering if the process stopped, then after a while, i see something happenning.
let me go check for that alternative CD.

KDE and Gnome Comparison
In Linux you have a large array of what are known as Desktop Managers. The two most popular ones are Gnome and KDE.
KDE has more graphical tools and is recommended for new users, but Gnome is a little bit faster as it uses less resources. Some say that Gnome is much more stable; which is kinda funny because some 8 years ago when I first started using Linux, KDE was much more stable than Gnome.
But in the end, it comes down to taste. Most Linux users experiment with both, and then choose the one they feel much more comfortable with. If you install Kubuntu, you can always install GNome on it also, and play around with it. If you install Ubuntu, you can also install KDE on it. And there are other Desktop Managers and Window Managers. I ended up using XFCE and IceWM. I am not into flashy eye-candy and prefer not to have my desktop cluterred. They say real IT guys don't point and click, we use the command line :D. But it comes down to personal taste and which one you feel most comfortable with.
You can do a search for screenshots of KDE and Gnome and see how they compare visually.

A Couple things about Ubuntu/Kubuntu
First point: I recommend that you download the 'ALTERNATIVE' version from Ubuntu's website. I do not like to install from the LIVE CD, it always fucks me up. When you boot up the CD, it will give you a text menu, asking you if you want to boot into Ubuntu/Kubuntu, or make install. If you slecect install, then it will take you directly to the install process without having to boot up the GUI. The GUI just spoils everything, because it is all running in RAM.
Second Point: did you partition your hard-drive before installing, or are you using the entire hard-drive for installing Linux. Bear in mind, that if you have windows in your hard drive installed, I recommend that you get partition magic, and create a partition for Linux so that you separate both OSes.
Hope you have some luck. Nowadays installing Linux is really a breeze. Back in the days, it was a real pain because you had to do everything manually (partition by heads and cylinders, select drivers for your peripherals, etc.). If you have any more problems, post them and we will help you out. Would be cool to organize a little install fest for persons who want to experiment with Linux for the first time.

how do they compare
KDE and Gnome?
or a matter of fact, different!

Instalation is a brezze.
Which is why I'm shocked you are haveing the issue you are, I would highly reccomend that you use Ubuntu over Kbuntu, I just don't like KDE.

original
its an original kubuntu 7.04 CD in the blue case with the gears logo on the cover.
Could it be a PC problem? or HD?
i'll let you know on that offer to send the CD, I'll have a friend try to install it first. which defeats the purpose of me learning.
the excitement builds!! :)
BTW, i forgot to mentioned it doesn't boot if i have in my NIC CNET PRO 200 in the computer. its stop on the screen where it checks different stuff with the [OK]s.

Strange.
I haven't used kbuntu only Ubuntu and have installed it hundreds of times with never a problem. Are you sure you got the whole ISO? Did you try to burn it from an infected windows machine? More and more virus and especial trojans speficaly screwup burning linux cdroms.
Are you doing the DVD image? Hell I can send one down on the bus to the city that I know works if you want or I'm sure Grep would give you a copy.

not impressed yet
most people are saying linux is better than windows. i can't get the damn thing installed. 0 of 5 attempts. I'm i supposed to be impressed?
i try to install kubuntu. the instruction says to click the install icon that is on the desktop, and its 6 steps after that. i only reach 5 all the time. its stop at 15%.
and before some error that the protocol has stop unexpectedly, whats that?
"Ambition is the last refuge of failure." Oscar Wilde
Opps
My bad Kbuntu use the KDE interface and Ubuntu uses the Gnome interface

The diff between Kbuntu and Ubuntu
Well Kbuntu is setup for education/educators, where as Ubuntu is setup for general usage. As to setup directions if you can install windows you can install Ubuntu just put the live
CD in and boot up check it out if you like it, and yes it will be a little slow cause it's running from cd but will be much faster after install. There is a button to click to install it just follow the directions and boom it's done. Now if you want to play DVDs you'll need to do a few extra steps (cause of US laws) but they are easy as well.

difference
can someone explain the difference between ubuntu and kubuntu and where can i find step by step instructions to install either?
I'm new to linux so go easy with the terms!
I'm thinking about migrating!

Linux Areo Like features - POWERFUL

Enligthenment Is my Fave
I like BlackBox, but I spend quite an amount of time customizing it. Ubuntu has different flavours already customized, so it cuts down on time. There is a distro of Ubuntu that has Enligthment as its Windowmanager(&Desktopmanager). I have seen some with FluxBox and BlackBox also. But then again, trying all of them kinda takes time. So I stuck with XFCE.
Black Box baby.
It's the only way to go fast lean and mean, kind of sexy too.
