I used to think that he was one of the more focussed and str8 thinking dudes from the Triangle Park Area because he was one of the few who had a job and he used to ask the dudes from the block hw they were doing in school if they had not yet dropped out. Why the hell would they arrest this guy for trying to protect his life? Is this true, i did not know that you can't own a bullet proof vest in Belize. I see you can in the US (of course Belize is not the US) but the point is, what can you do with a bullet proof vest besides protect yourself from getting shot.

Jesus, Belize is becoming a scary place to be a civilian....can't get a gun license, can't get a bullet proof vest...but the criminals seem to got it all.

computer technician was charged for presumably wanting to preserve his life. Today, twenty-five year old Paul Gibson of Nurse Seay Street was charged with possession of a prohibited material. Gibson pleaded not guilty to the charge, but admitted that he wore a bullet-proof vest for protection because he had been robbed four times this year. Chief Magistrate Margaret McKenzie explained that no bail could be offered and Gibson will spend Christmas behind bars until his case is heard on December twenty-ninth. The incident occurred shortly after ten last night when police saw Gibson on Mahogany Street and conducted a searched on him for drugs and firearms. The search revealed he was wearing a white bullet-proof vest with no markings which should not be in a civilian’s possession.

However after my frightening experience while watching carnival a couple weeks ago I can thoroughly agree that Belize is no longer the same place I used to feel comfortable going out in no matter if u do hear about constant shootings on the news. Somehow you always think that if u are not in a bad area and keep away from the gang members you are safe. The gangs have now dispersed outside of their known territories and bring thier beef into public gatherings in front of innocent civilians and most disturbing of all, children. Can u imagine how I felt when gunshots went off right in front of where I was standing watching the carnival with my three month old baby in my arms?? That I have to say was one of the most frightening experiences of my life. I had to run in doors and duck down on the floor with my baby while dozens of people I didnt know ran upstairs of my grandmother's house with their kids, also crouching on the floor for safety. All around there were women and kids crying. A day that was supposed to be one of fun and celebration turned into a nightmare and to make things worse little to our knowledge a grenade had been thrown right up the street! Honestly, I felt like I was in Iraq so anyone who wants to argue that Kemp exaggerated when he referred to Belize as one of the world's most dangerous places should just consider how they would have felt in my situation!

As a child, my friend’s younger brother would refuse to “do number 2” if he was away from home. During the normal course of their lives, this peculiar tendency did not affect the family. If the child was at school or otherwise out of his home, he would simply wait until he was home to do his “business”.

This tendency, however, became an issue when the family traveled away from home for extended periods while on vacation.

I don’t know exactly when or how, but my friend’s mother some how convinced her young son to “go” in a box when on vacation. The family would go to a grocery store and procure a box that would be large enough for the little boy to be able to squat and do his business in. The box would then be discarded. The solution worked well and as the years went by the child out grew the habit.

Years later, the then young man would be teased by his older brother for being a “box-shitter”. The teasing, especially when witnessed by people outside of the immediate family, would greatly upset him. After he could bear no more, he would attack his much older and larger brother.

His reaction to the teasing puzzled me.

If you shit in a box and someone finds out and tells other people, you shouldn’t get upset….because you did shit in the box. The box, the shit and you existed whether or not anybody else knew. Closing your eyes or pretending it did not happen, does not change the facts of the matter.

Right now the violence is affecting all ethnic groups: Garifuna, Creole, Mestizo, Indian, Mennonite, Chinese etc… These same ethnic groups have members that are directly involved in the drug trade which is fueling the violence. Also some of these gang members are actually kids of Central American immigrants; we also know that our neighbors to the north, south and west are all struggling with the same gang problem.

I know mostly the poor gets executed in Countries where the death penalty is legal, but I feel we really should revisit this form of punishment. Funny how the death penalty is not legal in most Central & South American countries but yet you find that death squads operate with frequency in these territories. There is a fine line between vigilantes and murder for hire squads, ask Chester about that it.

Not sure what your tirade and hidden attacks on one group is all about but it only serves to divide us even more.

And also it is news when no one is killed over a long weekend becuase we alwayz expect someone to be killed on long weekends. It was good that Ross Kemp came and did that show because if he did not come, most of us would be looking at the crime and murder situation like it is nothing new. Thanks Mr Kemp becuase since you made that documentary all of us Belizeans seem to be occuppied with the crime that has been tearing up Belize from within. It was a good piece of work even though I feel that more credible sources of information and less sensationalizing would have made the documentary more objective. Kemp should have interviewed Pinky of George Street instead of Brown and he should have also done some interviews in Bailar and Majestic Alley (Right behind Queen Street). Kemp should have also visted the Amandala Arhives to see the level of White Colar crime that flourished under Musa because the drug trade and gang violence are a reflection of crime at the very top levels of governemnt.

Just not accurate. That's the big problem with statics, the way you ask a question or frame the study or enviroment can produce accurate but not valide data. My guess it's skewed because our population is so small. Look at it this way, if we have 5 murders and there are 500 in LA statiscaly we have a higher murder rate because our pop is so much lower than theirs. That's why when poloticians or hell anyone starts spouting statistics I want to see the exact questoins and raw data, but then I don't trust anyone.

I agree, belize is not the 6th most likely city where you can get shot. I think it's the third most likely city(After Bagdad and Tibilsi) where you can get killed by a grenade.
