I KNOW THAT THE CANE FARMERS ARE HARD WORKING AND DESERVE THE BEST DEAL. BUT THEY ARE THE ONES THAT ARE NOT WANTING TO DEAL WITH THE SITUATION. THEY BRING DOWN THE NEGOTIATION, BECASUE AT FIRST THEY WANTED THAT THE SAMPLER NOT BE USED WHEN CALCULATIONG TE AMOUNT OF MONEY THEY WOULD COLLECT ON ECH TRIP OR TON DELIVERD. ACCORDIG TO BSI THEY AGREED THAT THEY WOULD NOT UTILESE THE SAMPLER FOR CALCULATING PAYMENT, BUT ONLY FOR RESEARCH BUT THE FARMERS DON'T WANT TO NEGOTIATE.
ITS A PITTY BECASUE THE ONLY BAD OUT OF THIS IS TO THE SAME CANE FARMERS THEMSELVES WHO ARE MAKING THIS SITUATION WORST!!!

Some Points to Consider

1. No one disputes that producers need to be more efficient, but we must also demand that the manufacturers be efficient too.
2. Has anyone explored whether it might be better still to pay the caneros collectively at the end of the day based on quality, but still individually pay them based on tonnage each delivers, so that they receive the same first payment, but the last payment that is paid collectively is based on quality.
3. The reason I proposed this is that perhaps the better producers might not mind subsidizing the poorer producers in that they will benefit still in that the poorer producers will not be marginalized or left to explore employment otherwise which is not available presently. This will lead to less unemployment and more socioeconomic stability. This would also make sense since quality is dependent on a variety of factors that is not based on human input, but geography like the lay of the land e.g. and rainfall.
4. The canefarmers do ascribe to the good life, but this is relative for them. The good life might not necessarily driving SUVs but having a comfortable home and good food to eat and being able to enjoy rural life and being surrounded by good neighbours who are not impoverished, free from crime.
5. The North is indeed different than the South in that no one sugar or banana baron dominate the industry. What you have in the North is wide distribution of landownership, so that there are more small farmers collectively than there are big farmers and the small farmers are each economically independent as opposed to simply being employees of a farm baron.
6. For the sake of stability, it might be best to preserve the status quo.

Why do you have to make everybody know you are a PUP? The issue is that the Canreos need to produce suagr cane that is of a better quality and they do not want that because they want to continue with the status quo that was in effect prior to the core sampler being implemented. The caneros should be rioting and protesting for more credit guarantees from the GOB for fertalizer and mechanization of the industry so that they can pproduce higher grade sugar cane. They should not be protesting for the right to continue producing low quality sugar cane. When all we deh da Chetumal, we all cud see dat fi deh sugar look real nice white, fine and sweet so why we nuh try fi be like deh Mexican sugar producers if we cant be betta dan dem? If you took History, Social Studies or Geography in Highschool you would know that Europe and North America do not want to buy Belizean (And to some extent Caribbean Sugar) if they had the choice because it i more expensive and of less purity/ lower quality and it is also against the free trade policies of Western governments which is why they have had to enter into special accomodation agreements to buy Belizean/Caribbean sugar at a higher price.

The implementation of a core

The implementation of a core sampling system was only AGREED to and made a law in 2001 but implemented and tested in 2006 to 2008 crop season by the s.c.q.c.c u dodo. That doesn't mean that the proper procedures were undergone. That was the responsiblitly of the sugar cane quality control board to educate the farmers about it and not mr. magaña. The one point three million dollar core sampler implemented by the Sugar Cane Quality Control Committee a part of the Sugar Industry Control Board was majority financed by the cane farmers since neither BSI nor the Governtment of Belize had the funds to purchase it at that time but was agreed to pay back to the association after its 100% full implementation. As for the $7.6 million granted to cane farmers under European Union grant program to increase production and quality, it was used to get fertilizers and herbicides, some of which also went into financing education programs and battling against froghopper infestation which had put a hurting on the industry in 2006/2007 season. In addition to that it was also used to subsidize farmer in the recovery due to effects of hurricane dean and also the recent floods caused by Tropical Depression (TD) No. 15. As for agreeing to another method, currently they are still holding meetings. Ohh and as for the gas buisiness i wont waste my time on that since the farmers only get duty free diesel which isnt used by the majority of drivers. And they dont get that fuel from free zone but use and id at the local gas stations to verify that they are indeed canefarmers.

Really just full ah RASS. First of all if you are selling illegal fuel then you dont need a license...mein u mek i feel sorry fu u. Secondly the farmers know that eventually they will need to use some method of cane quality testing so as to improve their quality....however the current method has not fallowed its proper procedure from having a field officer present at the cane field to determine the maturity of the came to the delivery time keeper to determine the time it takes to deliver it which both greatly affect the quality. The whole noise is that the proper methods have not been implemented.....it was all rushed. As for the contraband....every friggin body no mind drink mexican beer or buy cheaper goods which was forced by the high prices of things in belize..ohh and the ganja which you seem to smoke everytime you write wah comment probably does come from the north but im sure you no mine smoke it.

in the global economy; but at the same time you can't just go cold-turkey without making certain subsidies available to the farmers to offset their lost. Same old story we need to go back to the drawing board to retool up our skills so we can compete. The question is where do we get the money to subsidize these farmers who have families and mouths to feed? At the sametime we can't just create a hands-out situation.
There must be a middle ground for GOB, BSI & the Farmers. All sides need to get back to the table and start making realistic concessions.

The initial problem wasnt that they didnt want the core sampler. It was the inconsistent results it was given. If you cut the same cane from the same lot of land but send it in two seperate trucks one gives you good quality results and the other bad..how do you explain that and what are the implications and results to cane which grown in approximately 1000 square miles of land. As for the sugar industry going belly up it WILL NEVER happen or allowed by the people to happen. As the farmers said yesterday. First heads will fall before the industry does. In addition to that it is not the best interest of the entire belizean economy for it to go down. Cogeneration which is a multimillion dollar project behind BSI is too much of a high investment to be abandoned especially since it is almost operational. As a belizean-american, working as a economist for a Texas sugar company i feel it is my duty to shed some light on how the sugar industry works internationally. Undoubtedly, sugar is manufactured in the field as are sugar noncomponents. If sugar cane contains no sugar, the factory simply cannot produce any sugar. The basic problem in the purchasing of cane is the evaluation of the cane in order to know exactly what is in the cane that is being purchased. In the sugar world, there are quality standards established for refined sugar. In order to conform consumer requirements, the sugar refiners have to set up standards for the raw sugar they purchase as raw material. Logically, the raw sugar producers should in turn establish standards for sugarcane in order to fulfill the requirement of raw sugar quality, as well as quantity. There is less than a handful of countries that need to solve this problem with little incentive to good sugarcane growers but overpaying to suppliers of poor cane quality. Then theres the Selection System: Flat Price and Purchase Analysis.
Flat Price is the simplest system, by which cane is paid for at a price based on the price of raw sugar of local sugar market. By this flat price system the quality of the cane which regards to sucrose content and purity of juice is not considered. The disadvantages are obvious. However, this is still practiced in less than a handful of countries. With the increase of extraneous matters delivered along with cane stalks, the sugar produced per ton cane declined from year to year, even though the cane stalk quality may not have been degraded.
Purchase Analysis system of payment that in one way or another take into account the amount of sucrose in the cane are in use in a large number of the cane producing countries of the world. The advantages of a system on tests are several: in fact the only disadvantges are those involved in selecting an equitable arrangement for purchase agreeable to both the sugar refinery and sugarcane producers.
Am sure my fellow Belizeans with bright minds can solve this issue with a privatized company such as BSI, and i must say that this incident is rather unfortunate. However, we must be aware that Belize's Sugar Industry has to raise its standards when it comes to the raw material, in order to produce quality refined sugar to compete with the rest of the world.

It was the PUP who started the papaya industry you fool. It was the PUP who really expanded and promoted the Corozal Free Zone to create jobs for the Nortenos. Nobody disagrees that sugar cane farmers need to become more efficient at cane production, but they were simply asking your heartless government to suspend the core sampler especially given that they had had two bad years. That was their original request and they were bumped around to Montero then Gapy and finally told by the PM that he is too big to go meet with them. That then led to their move up their request to remove the core sampler completely.
Your stupid ass government also needs to demand efficient manufacturing from BSI and should also demand transparency in BSI's management and finances, because they have not been truthful to the farmers. These issues have been brewing for some time and your ignorant ass cannot open your mind to see the issues for what they really are.

Who says the papaya industry is fucked up? Have you done research or been up north? The papaya industry is still up and running as normal. Oh and as far as i can remember Fruta Bomba only had 1 small strike since its inception. The only thing killing farmers is the HUGE cost of living and SPIKE in the price of fertilizer that quadrupled since your government took office.

Did you not know they too sufferred from Hurricane Dean (literally) and the recent floods and it is a known fact that rainfall dilutes the sugar content in the cane and thereby dimishes the quality? Do you not know laws can de amended to remove the core sampler? Do you not know that your UDP government has power to amend this Act and show some sympathy for the poor caneros? Do you not know that your stupid ass government has not announced the creation of any new industry up North that would offer the caneros jobs? at the end of the day what will become of the industry....it is a fact that the industry will collapse if the farmers continue to be unreasonable....the quality of sugarcane needs to be improved - which is why the cane farmers sign unto the law which obligated using the core sampler since 2001!!! Is it fair to pay for no good cane the same price you pay for top quality cane? come on, be realistic....this thing is between the cane farmers and bsi. The cane farmers own money purchase the core sampler....the cane farmer association neva tell the farmers what they were getting into???/ mr. magana is the madafucka who mi need to get shot. all over the world the use of the core sampler is the standard which is used to pay for cane depending on the quality you deliver....why they want to "completely remove" the use of core sampler? you mean to tell me these caneros so ignorant that they the jeopardize the entire industry which put food on their table because they don't want to improve the quality of their produce. Listening to godwin hulse on the talk show last nite...data showed only a few people out of a couple hundred that were getting less money for their cane....as a matter of fact many were getting a lot more cash. the bottom line is that the sugar cane association can't do their job and can't control their farmers....the prime minister made it clear to them that they should call off the riot and meet on neutral grounds to solve the matter peacefully. mr magana instigated this thing....he was heard saying "lets get the 3 teams together" while sporting a bullet proof vest! at the end of the day we will be back here next year in the same situation because like it or not the farmers HAVE TO AGREE TO USE THE CORE SAMPLER because it is law and it is the global standard...take it or leave it.

everytime something goes wrong with the farmers, they strike, block the entrance to the factory and try to hold the country at ransom. it is time for farmers to stop behaving like 'spoil pickney'....or, suffer the consequence of their actions.....for tppp long, they have been tolerated by the previous government to have their way and the real issue is mis-information that has them following their leaders in the wrong direction. news from around December has the farmers in uproar for the CEO having 'mis-appropriated' millions of fairtrade money. now this same person gives them something else to herat them up so they can forget the money he stole from them. but it is also good lesson for BSI who helps to pay the salary and vehicle for this simpleton magana. he is the CEO for the farmers but is being paid by the SICB, a tri-party organization made up of GOB, BSI and Farmers
