Belmopan, 16 May 2008 (Belizean.com) - Despite promises made by the new United Democratic Government, the cost of living will take another hit as the price of a major commodity, rice, is due to rise sharply. Belize has been beset by rapidly escalating prices for fuel, fertiliser, milk, flour, butane, electricity and now rice.
A local T.V. station is tonight reporting Belizean consumers should get ready for a rise in the price of rice. Reports indicate that negotiations now nearing completion between government and producers will push the retail price at least as high as a dollar-fifteen per pound and perhaps as high as one-twenty.
Farmers cite the high costs of diesel fuel, fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides as the main reasons for the increase. A majority of Belize’s rice is grown on large mechanized farms around Blue Creek in the Orange Walk District with a significant minority produced on smaller plots in the Toledo District and milled
at Big Falls Village.
Belize is one of the few countries in Latin America that is self-sufficient in food despite attempts by Northe-American-based multi-nationals to convert the tiny English-speaking country into a net food importer.
