Men who are HIV-negative and who faithfully use a daily pill containing drugs to treat HIV can greatly reduce their risk of acquiring the deadly virus, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) says in a study released on Tuesday.
"These results represent a major advance in HIV prevention research," said Dr. Kevin Fenton, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention.
"For the first time, we have evidence that a daily pill used to treat HIV is partially effective for preventing HIV among gay and bisexual men at high risk for infection, when combined with other prevention strategies," said Dr. Fenton. This is "exciting and welcome news."
Unbelievable Belize: What's That Smell?: There is no such thing as a passive democracy

As a writer, I've been watching current events in my Belize and as we stumble through the news cycle from murder to scandal and back again, have composed numerous articles in my head to describe what I'm seeing. As quickly as I compose them, I dispose of them, running them through a mental shredder because 'that's not quite what I wanted to say.' However, as I'm sure someone profound said at some point, the only way to get to the destination is to start the journey.
Make no mistake about this: I love my country. I love Belize with all the desperation of two lovers who fight all the time, but in the end acknowledge that they can't live without each other and thus after a day of argument, go to bed secure in the peace of that knowledge. What I don't like, the thing that causes major conflict between head and heart, is what's happening to my beautiful country, and why.
Interesting History
Submitted by Aries1 on Tue, 2010-11-09 09:37. GeneralWhere did Piss Poor come from?
They used to use urine to tan animal skins, so families used to all pee in a pot & then once a day it was taken & Sold to the tannery.......if you had to do this to survive
you were "Piss Poor".
But worse than that were the really poor folk who couldn't even afford to buy a pot... they "didn't have a pot to piss in" and were the lowest of the low.
The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be. Here are some facts about the 1500s:
Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and they still smelled pretty good by June. However, since they were starting to smell. Brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.

Seismic shockers are to be expected, but planet seems to be more active

Chile is on a hotspot of sorts for earthquake activity. And so the 8.8-magnitude temblor that shook the region overnight was not a surprise, historically speaking. Nor was it outside the realm of normal, scientists say, even though it comes on the heels of other major earthquakes.
One scientist, however, says that relative to the time period from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s, Earth has been more active over the past 15 years or so.

Recently, a friend of mine complained about a spate of burglaries that had occurred near her newly bought home. A house down the street from hers had been burgled in the weeks before, and her next-door neighbor had been burgled not long afterward. In the latter case, the thieves had made off with a large-screen plasma television set and a laptop computer, apparently having walked out of the house with them in broad daylight.
My friend was evidently disgusted by this thievery — as well she should be — and seemed to have difficulty comprehending how the people responsible could bring themselves to break into a home and take what did not belong to them. "How dare they!" she said. "What makes them think they have the right to do this?"
Microsoft says some Hotmail passwords exposed

SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp said on Monday that passwords belonging to some users of its Hotmail e-mail service were exposed on an Internet site, but had since been taken down.
The company did not say how many users were affected, but some reports suggested that passwords to more than 10,000 accounts were exposed.
"We are aware that some Windows Live Hotmail customers' credentials were acquired illegally by a phishing scheme and exposed on a website," a Microsoft spokesman said.
Phishing is a scam whereby fraudsters get hold of personal information by sending out emails under the guise of a bank, IT department or some other trustworthy source.

SAN FRANCISCO - The federal government has severed the Internet connection of a company accused of helping criminals serve up a "witches' brew" of nasty content online, from computer viruses to child pornography.
It's likely to be just a short-lived victory in the fight against cybercrime, though, since bad guys are very good at getting back online quickly.
The Federal Trade Commission said Thursday that it has ordered the shutdown of a company called Pricewert LLC, described in a complaint filed in San Jose, Calif., federal court as an Oregon-based shell company run by "overseas criminals", operating out of Belize and running many it’s illegal operations out of servers in Silicon Valley.

Three months ago, Google took a big step by "graduating" data on 16 countries from Google Map Maker to Google Maps. Now, comparatively speaking, the company's performed a long jump by following suit with another 64 countries and territories.
This move means that the maps are transitioning from a smallish, private sort of program into public view. It acts as a big endorsement of user-generated content, since regular users are indeed the source of all the geographic info. And they've contributed a whole lot.

COMMENTARY: The expulsion of Belize from CONCACAF is humiliating to our football players and country

As a former national football player in Belize and a coach here in the United States, I find it humiliating that my country was expelled from CONCACAF due to the negligence of some members of Government and the FFB, which is the Football Federation of Belize under the leadership of Doctor Bertie Chimilio.
In our Government’s cabinet there is a Minister of Sports who should be responsible for all sporting activities in the country. Under the previous government, they reshuffled their cabinet so many times that it is hard for me to tell who was the last Minister of Sports during their reign. The only one I remember was Cordel Hyde.
