Study: New pill greatly reduces HIV risk for men

By Cheryl Wetzstein

Men who are HIV-negative and who faithfully use a daily pill containing drugs to treat HIV can greatly reduce their risk of acquiring the deadly virus, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) says in a study released on Tuesday.

"These results represent a major advance in HIV prevention research," said Dr. Kevin Fenton, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention.

"For the first time, we have evidence that a daily pill used to treat HIV is partially effective for preventing HIV among gay and bisexual men at high risk for infection, when combined with other prevention strategies," said Dr. Fenton. This is "exciting and welcome news."

Unbelievable Belize: What's That Smell?: There is no such thing as a passive democracy

Posted: 22 Nov 2010 09:24 PM PST

As a writer, I've been watching current events in my Belize and as we stumble through the news cycle from murder to scandal and back again, have composed numerous articles in my head to describe what I'm seeing. As quickly as I compose them, I dispose of them, running them through a mental shredder because 'that's not quite what I wanted to say.' However, as I'm sure someone profound said at some point, the only way to get to the destination is to start the journey.

Make no mistake about this: I love my country. I love Belize with all the desperation of two lovers who fight all the time, but in the end acknowledge that they can't live without each other and thus after a day of argument, go to bed secure in the peace of that knowledge. What I don't like, the thing that causes major conflict between head and heart, is what's happening to my beautiful country, and why.

Interesting History

Where did Piss Poor come from?

They used to use urine to tan animal skins, so families used to all pee in a pot & then once a day it was taken & Sold to the tannery.......if you had to do this to survive
you were "Piss Poor".

But worse than that were the really poor folk who couldn't even afford to buy a pot... they "didn't have a pot to piss in" and were the lowest of the low.

The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be. Here are some facts about the 1500s:

Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and they still smelled pretty good by June. However, since they were starting to smell. Brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.

PLACENCIA CONFUSED

Man, do you believe what happened in the Placencia Village Council elections past! I heard that the past Chairman Brian Yearwood lost. Man, that's hard to believe! I've been in meetings with this guy and he really worked hard to do allot for that Village i.e., sanitation company creation, by-laws, land for the villages, sewer system etc. etc. I hear that he was in a constant battle with Area Rep Melvin Hulse. I hear Hulse put in (three days before election) the "Old" Chairman - Glen Eiley to run againt Yearwood and a PUP named Charles Leslie Jr. I hear this messed up UDP by spliting the red votes.
