Rebuilding After Floods
Submitted by shalaine on Sun, 2008-11-09 18:55. GeneralAfter the food waters have receded, we Belizeans must begin the huge tasks of getting our lives back on track. It will be hard but there is no other choice. We need to be supportive of one another. Volunteer some of your free time to assist other people to rebuild. Remember, this is a very unexpected expense for most of us and much of the people affected are needy.

B.D.F. soldier accused of stealing underwear
Submitted by YelloW on Tue, 2008-11-04 20:21. GeneralMeanwhile in the Magistrate Court, a B.D.F. soldier was promptly charged with Theft this morning. Twenty-eight year old Felis Sho, a resident of Belmopan, is facing the charge for the theft of a female underwear. The incident purportedly happened last Friday when Sho went to the house of Sylvia Chiac on George Street. According to Chiac, the B.D.F. soldier was looking for her boyfriend who was not at home at the time. He reportedly asked to use the bathroom and thereafter went to another room from where he stole Chiac’s underwear described as colorful and valued at three dollars and fifty cents. Police say that when they apprehended Sho, they found the underwear in his pockets. Sho was released on bail of two thousand five hundred dollars by Magistrate Rachael Montejo who set his next court date for December fifth.

Corruption in Dangriga town Council
Submitted by mdevane on Sun, 2008-10-26 17:14. PoliticsFrank Mena and his council reported to central government that they needed 58,000 BZ dollars to buy a compator to fix the streets but only paid 5,000 Us for it. Where did the other 48,000 BZ dollars go? If that is not the samething that they accused Ralph and Said of doing then I don't know what is.. They all want power so that they can rob the belizean people.
Have you taken a trip to dangriga lately? the place is deplorable. So we can't say maybe they took the balance of that money to develop the town.
The mayor and his council needs to be brought to justice. I heard two of the councillo

Government Scraps Plan to Build Sports Center
Submitted by Trialftruth on Fri, 2008-10-17 10:07. GeneralThe Belize Sports Center that was promised two years ago will not be built as promised. The decision has been made by government after reviewing the cost of the project. It was originally scheduled to cost $17 million but due to a sharp spike in construction costs, mostly steel, the cost has risen to $26 million. Problem is, government only has $12 million and an official release says that it cannot come up with the $14 million.
So that $12 million, comprised of a $10 million loan from Taiwan and a $2 million grant from Venezuela will now be re-programmed with the approval of the two donor countries. The official release says it will be used to use the money to repair and upgrade existing sports facilities across the country.
Political Theory
Submitted by chandragupta on Sun, 2008-10-12 08:51. PoliticsI found a book a while back entitled "The Malay Dilemma" it is a memoir by Mahathir, a past Prime Minister of Malaysia (another former British Colony) and after opening and reading a bit I was immediately struck by how much of the theory resonated with my own experience and understanding of what was happening in Belize at di time. I copied down this passage what I found insightful:
Mahathir writes: "Membership of the cabinet is treated as a reward for loyalty to party chiefs and acceptability to the Prime Minister. Once appointed, no amount of dereliction of duty could affect the position of a minister. On the other hand, even if the minister performed well, failure to remain on good terms with the prime minister meant removal from the ministry."
Political reform
Submitted by tmike on Wed, 2008-10-08 16:18. GeneralWith the resent convention seemingly behind the residence of the City, and the restoration of peace within the camp, one has to wonder why are we paying so much to city councilors.
If we take a look at the victorious slate, There are a couple of persons who we know what their credentials are educationally. We need to start electing persons qualified in the areas they want to serve us in and walk away from the political popularity contest. It will not serve us as a city one bit to have persons there who know nothing about balancing a budget, waste management, traffic control, beautification, poverity reduction and revenue generation.
