The other day the Reporter did a very good article on solar panels being offered and nobody made a peep about it, these things should be looked into by a body such as the PUC. Several things along these lines could be done to lower our dependency on foreign sources for this most vital PUBLIC utility.

First remove the assine environmental tax on the importation of solar and windmill means of power generation. Further remove all import duties and GST or any other form of tax or impediment to their importation and use.

Write and enact a net metering law requiring the power company to provide free net meters and installation of same. For those who don't know net metering is a method by which the power a person generates is use by that person and if more is generated then it flows into the grid for others to use and if it doesn't completely offset usage power flows from the grid to that person or business. Mind you if you generate more than you use your meter will run backwards and the power company will either be required to issue a credit or pay the consumer the difference. Both of these methods have pluses and minus. But I would recommend the credit method this would insure that when you can't generate power because of rain or lack of wind, you can draw down on your credit keeping your bill low or none existent, this would help those would not save the money from extra generation and insure they could afford power and cut the cost to the power company ie they would not have to issue hundreds of checks which would entail an additional expense which they would of course feel obligated to pass on to the consumer.

By enacting net metering people would not be required to buy large amounts of batteries and expensive charge controllers and would be providing power to all instead of just themselves, and remove the real environmental concern regarding said batteries.

LEt communities pool resources to purchase near-by wind-mills and solar panels that pay for themselves in 20 years. less than that with rising oil prices.

Is this happening all over belize or just in san pedro, we are experiencing some black outs here in san pedro. The electricity has been going out like crazy, everyday we are experiencing black outs, the electricity has been going out like about 20 to 30 times a days, i already got some appliances burnt already. Who pays for these things? This is crazy, this only happens in belize WHY????? Is it because we have weak govenrments or is it because we have a corrupted government that cannot handle this?
